The first Indian Oscar recipient is Marathi

The countdown has begun for 81st Academy Awards as 2 Indians have been nominated – A R Rehman and Resul Pookutty for the movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. Deccan Herald carried an interesting article on Bhanu Athaiya, the first Indian recipient of an Oscar Award. She had won the award for costume designing for the movie ‘Gandhi’.

3M is sure that very few people know that Bhanu is Marathi! Her maiden name was Bhanumati Rajopadhye and was born and brought up in Kolhapur.

She wasn't the first Indian. Satyaji Ray won the Oscar Lifetime Achievement Award in early 1990s. Check your facts. She is the 2nd Indian.
